Irrigation access and livelihood support helped a small farming family in Chitare move from water scarcity and debt dependence to stable income, improved yields, and long-term security.
In the quiet village of Chilare in Dhule district, farming was shaped by water scarcity and low returns. On a two-acre farm, Mridan Rai Singh Pawra’s family relied on rain-fed cultivation and moneylenders, growing crops like chillies, brinjal, and millets under constant uncertainty, making it difficult to plan for the future.
Through the Desh Bandhu Jan Utkarsh Pariyojna, the Foundation supported the family with an irrigation system—including a motor pump and pipeline—to address water access challenges. The intervention also enabled vegetable cultivation, goat rearing, and market facilitation to improve farm viability and returns.
Living in a remote coastal village in Palghar, Jitendra Bari managed diabetes and hypertension with irregular access to care. A Lives program community mobiliser connected him to screening, follow-up, and specialist diagnostics—revealing advanced coronary disease that required timely surgical intervention.
With reliable irrigation and livelihood inputs, agricultural output increased and annual income rose to between ₹70,000 and ₹80,000. The family no longer depends on moneylenders, invested in solar panels for their home, and began prioritising their children’s education — laying the foundation for a more secure future.
